INITIATION DATE: Summer 1998 COMPLETION DATE: Open-ended
METHOD OF INVESTIGATION: Potential participants will be contacted by telephone and then mailed questionnaires to be completed by parents and teachers. Twins who meet the criteria will be invited to the NIH for a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. MRI produces detailed images of the brain without the use of needles or "x-rays", i.e., no radioactivity. In addition to the MRI, we do a cheek swab to determine twin zygosity, conduct interviews, and do some cognitive testing. All services are free of charge. Transportation to NIH will be reimbursed and accommodations will be provided for a 2- to 3-night stay. Depending on degree of participation in the study, families may be given an "inconvenience fee" of up to $160 per twin. In addition, twins will receive pictures of their brains to bring home.
